kirtan

Call and response chanting of sacred mantras. In kirtan there is no audience and performer, just one unified group. Kirtan relies on simple, easily duplicated tunes or 'dhuns' with the intention on the mantra. Based on the Gaudiya Vaishnav traidion of:

"Hari nama, hari nama, hari nama eva kevalam.
Kalu naste eva, naste eva, naste eva, gateh anyatah"

"Chant the holy name! Chant the holy name! Chant the holy name!
In this age of Kali, there is no other way, no other way, no other way to achieve liberation."

Sri leads on vocal and harmonium and is accompanied by tabla or mrdanga and various instrumentation depending on venue/event.

classical indian music

Different from kirtan and less familiar to western (in particular, yoga) audiences, classical Indian music is to be enjoyed rather than participated in by the audience. Each piece begins slow with alaap or vocal improvisation within the context of the particular raag and then moves on to the piece itself. This sophisticated style is perfect for parties or events where the music may or may not need be the focal point of attention. It is a beautiful opportunity for the listener to become comfortable and simply relax and enjoy.

classical indian dance

Sri's primary classical Indian dance discipline is Mohini Attam from the south-western corner state of Kerala. Translated as 'dance of the enchantress,' Mohini Attam replicates the swaying of the palm trees native to this beach state and is softer than some of its sister disciplines. She is a disciple of the very accomplished Radha Carmen.  Sri is also a student of Odissi under the tutelage of the great Nandita Behera and Kathak with the  enchanting Prachi Dixit.

These classical disciplines feature beautiful dances in honor of Sri Ganesh, Siva, Durga, Krishna & Radha with mudras, facial and body movements telling ancient stories from the Puranas (scriptures).
